Are Braces Used On The Upper And Lower Teeth?

In many cases braces are placed on the upper and the lower teeth to align them. When the teeth that are crooked or the bite problem is with either the upper or lower teeth, braces can just be placed on that row of teeth. This will depend on the factors that determine braces are needed by the dentist or after being referred to the orthodontist.

It will depend on the condition, such as a bite that needs to be corrected that might require both sets of teeth to have braces, while if it is to correct crooked teeth on the top or bottom only one set of braces might be needed. The orthodontist decides whether just the upper or lower teeth need braces or both sets, after the condition has been evaluated and x-rays are taken.

When braces are placed on only the upper teeth or the lower teeth it has the same effect of aligning the teeth and the bite, they also have the wire that will be adjusted. The adjustment is what places pressure on the teeth to reposition them and it is done at specific times during the time braces are worn. Adjustments are done on both the upper or lower braces.

The decision if braces are needed on the upper teeth, the lower teeth or both will correct the dental problem and make chewing, biting and dental health better. It will also help to prevent tooth decay and a more confident smile.
