Before & After Photos Of Dr. Suzuki's Patients

Example #1:  Case OE

This first series of 6 photos shows an 17 year old patient with a significant underbite. Generally in cases like this an orthodontist will correct the underbite using a combination approach of treatment with braces along with orthognathic jaw surgery to reposition the lower jaw back to correct the underbite. In this situation -- I had 1) a patient that did not want surgery and 2) was still growing and not yet a candidate for surgery anyways. This left me with very few options other than treatment with self-ligating Damon braces which I have a lot of experience with.

Since there was an underbite and in most cases underbite is caused by people's upper jaws being too small, I decided not to extract any teeth in the upper jaw because that would only make the underbite worse. Fortunately, the patient responded very well to the treatment with the variable torque Damon System braces and was really good at wearing his elastics which helped settle the teeth. The patient and I are very happy with the result!

Example #2:  Case CA

This patient was 22 years old when I saw her.  Her chief complaint was the anterior open bite and excessive grinding of her back teeth.  She had been to two other orthodontists.  Both of them recommended jaw surgery and/or extraction of permanent teeth.  She presented with a signficant tongue thrust habit -- which was diagnosed as the main cause of her malocclusion (bad bite). She first had speech therapy to correct the tongue thrust and followed this by comprehensive treatment with braces for 15 months treatment time.  The "after" photos you see were taken 3 years after treatment was completed.  As you can see -- there is no relapse of the open bite.

Example #3:  Case NS

This 11 year old patient initially presented with very crowded teeth and a large overjet (i.e. upper teeth protruding).   He was first treated with braces on all the upper and lower teeth to correct the significant crowding (20 months treatment) because he wasn't growing a lot yet and the upper front teeth needed correction in order for the second part of the treatment to work well.  The excess overjet was corrected after the braces with a removable Twin Block functional appliance for another year during the time he was growing a lot.  In total the treatment took 32 months -- which is an illustration of how very different people's mouths can be when it comes to fixing the problems that exist.

Example #4:  Case TN

This patient's main problem is underbite and severe crowding.  The patient was 9 years old when I started treatment.  The treatment involved a maxillary expansion appliance (RME) followed by upper braces only. Total treatment time was 12 months.  The lower teeth were not treated.  The "after" picture was taken 5 years after the completion of treatment -- because at the time that I finished her treatment she still had a number of baby teeth left.  What this case illustrates is how "interceptive" or "early" orthodontic treatment can benefit a patient significantly -- even without a second phase of treatment with full braces.  I am very happy with the outcome of this treatment considering what her teeth looked like initially.

Example #5: Case NH

This patient presented with a deep overbite and crowding.  He was 15 years old at the time and came to see me for a second opinion because he was told he needed jaw surgery to fix his bite.  This patient was treated with self-ligating braces for a total treatment time of 24 months. We achieved a nice result without surgery -- it just took longer than the typical 18 month treatment time because there was a fairly signficant discrepancy between the upper jaw and the lower jaw that had to be corrected with inter-arch elastics.  The patient was very happy with the result.

Example #6:  Case KN

This is an typical example of crowded teeth that I see in my office.  The patient was 15 years old at the start of treatment.  Treatment time was 18 months with self-ligating braces.  No extractions, no headgear, no surgery.

Example #7:  Case MA

This is another patient that came to see me for a second opinion.  He was a 12 year old patient that had been diagnosed with severe crowding.  It was recommended that he have 4 permanent premolar teeth extracted.  I did not think extraction of premolars would be beneficial to his facial appearance especially in profile --  and as such, we decided to treat him with a non-extraction treatment plan. Treatment was started in August 2001 and finished in July 2003.  Treatment was started before all the permanent teeth had erupted -- so we had to wait for a couple of teeth to grow in and that contributed to the longer treatment time of 23 months. If you notice -- the gums on the upper canines are receding and this is because the teeth had fully erupted on the outside and now had no attached gingiva on them.  Had I been able to start treatment a year earlier -- we could have avoided this problem.  This patient was sent to a periodontist (gum specialist) after treatment for gingival grafting in both these areas as a preventative measure.

Example #8:  Case JE

As you can see on this case -- the upper right canine is erupting through the gum because there is a significant lack of space (crowding) in the upper arch which has blocked out the canine.  The lateral incisor and first bicuspid on the upper right are actually touching!  We had to created about 7 mm of space in the upper arch.  No extraction of permanent teeth was used.  Treatment time was 18 months with self-ligating braces.
