Do You Need A Referral From The Dentist To Get An Appointment With An Orthodontist?
When a person needs braces the usual procedure is that the dentist will refer the patient to seek the service of an orthodontist. It is not necessary to have a referral, but usually the dentist will be able to see the beginning of a problem with tooth alignment or other bite problems. They are able to see this by the way the teeth have grown in, the way the teeth are when they are closed and the x-rays will also be able to confirm problems with the alignment or bit pattern.
There are some people that go straight to the orthodontist, these are usually either people that are adults that know they have problems with their bite or the alignment of their teeth and feel that braces may be able to correct this problem. Then there are also people that relocate while they have their braces and need to see an orthodontist for the proper care they need. This means in many cases the patient with alignment or bite problems is referred to the orthodontist by their dentist, the orthodontist can also take people as patients that have not been referred to them by a dentist.
It does not matter if a person is referred to the orthodontist or seeks one because they know they have bite or alignment problems the important thing having braces on the teeth if they are needed to correct problems before they cause other problems like TMJ or problems chewing or the incorrect wearing of the teeth.
