Do They Still Use Metal Braces?
There are still metal braces and in some alignment problems they are the type of braces that must be used to correct the bite problem. There is a difference, the metal braces have changed and are no longer large, bulky and uncomfortable. They also are not the braces of yesterday that were referred to as metal mouths. This is because they have been remade into comfortable braces that do not make the appearance a completely noticeable.
The way that the metal braces are used today are in a smaller and lighter weight metal bands that are used on the back teeth while on the front teeth is arch wire that is attached to brackets that are glued on to the teeth. This means while the back teeth have the conventional braces that are able to tackle extreme bite problems the front teeth do not show a mouth of metal. They are also a more effective brace system to correct the teeth in a shorter amount of time.
These type of braces also have the advantage of being made of materials that hold the adjustment longer than in the past, it was common with the old metal braces to need adjustments every three or four weeks. Today there are fewer visits to the orthodontist for adjustments with visits approximately every six to eight weeks. The adjustments are also less painful than they were with the old metal braces because there was much more hardware on the teeth and protruding from the teeth.
