What Is A Class II Malocclusion?

A class II Malocclusion occurs when the lower jaw is in a position where it is further back than it should be and the upper teeth stick out past the lower teeth, this is also referred to as an over bite or buck teeth. The chin often appears pushed back or smaller in patients with a class II Malocclusion.

This is a dental problem that not only needs to be treated by an orthodontist and braces to change the protrusion of the front teeth for aesthetic reasons but for the general health of the teeth and the jaw.

Having this type of teeth alignment can cause problems with chewing and with the jaw movement. Not treated teeth will wear incorrectly and the jaw will begin to pop and crack. These are signs of TMJ that will become more painful over time if not corrected with braces. Braces will change the positioning of the teeth and align them so that the bite is correct and this will cause less stress on the jaw. Placing braces on this type of dental problem will also change the appearance when the braces are taken off the teeth.

Chewing will also be changed as the braces correct this problem, prior to the class II Malocclusion being corrected the molars are not aligned properly making chewing more difficult. This problem untreated can leave the teeth in a position where they do not wear properly and they are more prone to braking over time because of the improper alignment.
