What Does A Class I Malocclusion mean?
This means that the patient has crowded teeth that in many cases overlap and the upper jaw is in a normal relationship with the lower jaw. There is no protrusion of either the upper or lower teeth, like can be found with other types of bite problems that require braces to correct the teeth.
The term malocclusion means that the teeth are not aligned properly and in many cases it can be hereditary, which means it is passed down generation to generation. There is also some evidence that it can occur in children that have lost their baby teeth early due to decay. A class I malocclusion is also the most common problem that braces are used to correct and one that orthodontists see regularly. The relationship with the molars is normal in most cases at the first molar and the other teeth can have spacing problems and crowding.
The class I malocclusion is a problem that can be corrected within a reasonable amount of time to align the teeth properly, which can add comfort to closing the mouth, chewing because when corrected it will take pressure off the jaw or the tempromandibular joint. The usual placement of the teeth with a class I malocclusion without correction can cause the teeth to become decayed along with the other problems of the tempormandibular joint. This is why an orthodontist or dentist will recommend the patient be fitted with braces to correct the condition before damage is done to the teeth and to relieve pressure.
