The mold that is taken of the teeth along with the x-rays make it possible for the orthodontist to ensure the braces will be placed correctly and be the proper size along with the arch wire and the placement of the bands. This is important because as the braces are worn over time the placement of the bands will be changed to place pressure on different parts of the teeth.
