If I Have Braces When They Are Adjusted Does It Hurt?

When braces are adjusted it puts more pressure or new pressure on the teeth and it is often sore for a few days until the teeth and gums become used to the new pressure. It should not hurt in a way that it is extreme pain, but rather sore and a discomfort that the use of ibuprofen will help to alleviate.

It is necessary to have the adjustments done to move the teeth into proper alignment and as the teeth move the adjustments might become more often and each time the teeth will be sore for a few days. These adjustments are helping the braces and the bands be more effective and the sooner the teeth are properly aligned the sooner the braces will come off of the teeth.

There are some things that can help during the times that the teeth are sore, eating soft foods like puddings, mashed potatoes, pancakes, soups and even soft chicken. Eating soft foods means that there is not the need to chew excessively and there is also not the need to have anything caught in the teeth. There are many soft foods that also taste good and along with the use of ibuprofen the soreness will not be difficult to deal with and it will not last as long as it could if hard foods are eaten. Cold foods like ice cream, frozen yogurt and milk shakes can also help to relive the soreness.
